There is a reason why it is not March already, like it normally would be. That reason is the Leap Year!
Leap Year got its name because of the fact that ordinarily, the period from March 1-February 28 of the next year will advance two days instead of one, so a birthday in this period would be on a Saturday, even if it was on a Thursday the previous year. Thus, the extra day of the year means “leaping over” a day in the week. The number of days in the year is brought up to 366, and the Leap Year occurs only every four years.
Leap Day was added to keep the calendar year synchronized with the seasonal year. Because seasons and astronomical events do not repeat in a whole number of days, calendars that have the same number of days in each year drift over time with respect to the event that the year is supposed to track. By inserting an additional day or month into the year, the drift can be corrected.
I also just want to say that I was at the San Diego Concert for the TobyMac Hits Deep Tour yesterday featuring Hollyn, Britt Nicole, Building 429, Colton Dixon, Capital Kings, Finding Favour, and TobyMac himself! I had a wonderful time there.
