The most destructive thing in the universe. What is it? The Death Star from Star Wars, of course! What else could it be?
This thing was the real deal. It could completely destroy other planets, and was such an advanced military-operating base, considered to be impenetrable. And along came Luke Skywalker, and the next thing you know is the thing blew up into a million bits in space. But don’t fret; another, bigger Death Star was created for Lord Sidious and Darth Vader. However, Luke came and blew the whole thing up again. Man, is this frustrating! Something of such historical significance… Poof, gone in a flash!
Over 34,000 people in America took this seriously, and signed a petition for the US military to construct a Death Star like the one in Star Wars. The White House typically responds to petitions with over 20,000 signatures within a deadline, so they must have paid attention to this one. I can just imagine President Obama gathering his cabinet together and deciding about what to do in this situation. You can imagine the faces of government! In a response given by Paul Shawcross, chief of the Science and Space Branch at the Office of Management and Budget, he said: “The Administration shares your desire for job creation and a strong national defense,” Sounds good, right? “but a Death star isn’t on the horizon.” Aww, why not? “The Administration does not support blowing up planets. Why would we spend countless taxpayer dollars on a Death star with a fundamental flaw that would be exploited by a one-man starship?” He has a point, but it is still a major let-down for all those major Star Wars fans!
The Death Star is estimated to cost about $850 Quadrillion (1 with 15 zeroes next to it). Whoa… Finally an amount of money big enough to pay off the national debt! A bit much, but remember that the Empire in Star Wars was basically in control of the entire galaxy, and could easily get lots of money real fast. I guess there’s no Death Star in the sky for you to look at…. yet.
