Today is Christmas, a time to celebrate Jesus Christ’s birth!
Many people know the story behind Christ’s birth, with the Wise Men coming and the shepherds as well, but in many cases, this awesome part of the Christian Bible has been overshadowed by something else: Santa Claus. More people have heard of Santa Claus (or Santa Bum, as my cousin Alex calls him) than Jesus’s story, and the spirit of belief and joy in Christ was twisted by some to Santa. Christ has in many cases been shut out of Christmas, the most important holiday of the year, with the prospect of Santa Claus traditionally coming down the chimney and delivering presents. In some cases, people even spell Christmas X-Mas, a not-too-subtle way of literally putting an X over Christ’s name!
The story of Santa Claus came from St. Nicholas in the 4th century A.D. St. Nick was the Bishop of Myra in Asia Minor. One version of the story is that he threw purses with Gold inside into homes, one legend even saying he threw one down the chimney. I don’t think that St. Nick, a devout Christian, would have wanted to be put over Christ! Another version of how Santa Claus could have come about is actually concerning the Wise Men and the presents they gave to Jesus in the manger.
Santa Claus came from a Christian background, but has been twisted to be the icon of Christmas. We must remember the true meaning of Christmas, Jesus Christ’s birth. Remember the blessings God has given YOU this year, and have a Very Merry Christmas!
